2023 Kia Niro Review | EV, Hybrid, PHEV
Bigger and taller, the Kia Niro represents a family of electric SUVs that may have a good match for your daily commute. It is available as the 2023 Kia Niro EV, Niro Hybrid and Niro PHEV.
For 2023, it now claims more best-in-class aspects, including its hybrid fuel economy, its passenger volume, and its cargo volume. This year the powertrains are more powerful. The EV charges faster and has more driving range.
Here’s what you need to know about each model to know whether the Niro is right for you.
2023 Niro HEV
With a big spread of price points, the Niro family is extremely efficient at every level. It all starts with the hybrid.
The 2023 Kia Niro HEV earns 53 miles per gallon with 16-inch wheels or 49 mpg with 18-inch wheels. Standard driving range is 588 miles, and Touring model range is 476 miles. An idle stop-and-go system reduces how much gasoline is used when stuck idling at redlights.
This remarkable fuel economy is achieved with a 32kW electric motor and turbo power.
As it did for the 2022 Kia Niro, the electric motor drives the front wheels. The performance output is 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft.
No plug in is needed. With hybrid technology, the system recharges the battery while driving. Multi-step regenerative braking balances energy capture with braking needs. A new Green Zone mode will help it rely more on its electric capability.
The Niro provides a much better driving experience than the Toyota Prius with only 121 horsepower and 105 lb-ft. In another comparison, the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq hybrid has a 139-horsepower system that generates only 109 lb-ft of torque.
2023 Niro PHEV
To raise that fuel economy, the 2023 Niro PHEV is a plug-in hybrid. It is available in EX and SX trim levels. The combination of a 62kW electric motor with the hybrid 1.6-liter engine generates 180 horsepower. Torque output is 195 lb-ft, and it’s controlled by 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Blending hybrid technology and plug-in EV tech, it needs only three hours on a level 2 charger. A full charge allows the Niro PHEV to go 33 miles. Combined MPGe is now 108 miles, a 25-percent improvement.
Green Zone mode is sure to help drivers improve fuel economy in many city situations. Intelligent Regenerative Braking helps restore battery power just as it does on the regular hybrid. You can order your Niro through this Peoria Kia dealer. We also offer competitive financing.
What is Green Zone Drive Mode?
Green Zone Drive Mode is a new technique for conserving power and making the most of the electric vehicle systems in the 2023 hybrid and plug-in hybrid Niro. In residential areas, Green Zone mode switches the Niro from hybrid power to EV power.
This clever system learns when to employ electric-only power. Working with the navigation system, it gathers the vehicle’s driving history over time, discovering home, workplace, school and other frequently visited locations.
Basically it learns neighborhoods and other places where the driver will be taking things slow. Navigation helps it find other EV opportunities such as hospital zones. This is one of the many reasons that this is a good time to buy an electric car.
2023 Niro EV
As a full electric vehicle, the 2023 Kia Niro EV has an EPA estimated driving range of 253 miles. That represents an increase over the 2022 Kia Niro EV. Offering the most power in the Niro family, the electric powertrain creates 201 horsepower, and its electric-equivalent fuel economy is 113 mpg-e.
Using a Level 2 charger at home, it is ready in less than 7 hours. It doesn’t even need the whole night to be re-charged. On the road, an owner can stop with a 10 percent charge and restore it to 80 percent in less than 45 minutes with an 85 kW charger. It’s available in Wind and Wave trim levels.
The Kia EV has vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability. Like the Kia EV6, the Niro EV can act as a generator for small appliances. It is useful at home during a power outage. When too far from a power outlet, it can be used for a power tool or camping stove.
What is Intelligent Regenerative Braking?
Regenerative braking helps maintain battery power by capturing energy as the vehicle is stopping. Intelligent regeneration has been redesigned to be more effective for both braking and energy capture.
Radar assists the system with calculating what’s needed for the speed and road gradient. At slow speeds, it can capture more power. At high speeds or downhill slopes, it can add more stopping power. And it all happens automatically.
Exterior
Sculptural styling and distinctive shapes combine to set the Niro apart from other SUVs. The compelling design defies the stodgy stereotype of hybrids and EVs.
A tiger nose grille is flanked by upswept heartbeat-inspired running lights. Looking from the side, Kia Niros are easily recognizable by the unique Aero Blade. At the rear, you may notice the heart-shaped reflector and boomerang tail lights.
Niro Hybrid and Plug In Hybrids have black wheel arches and black door cladding. This sets them apart from the EV which has black or steel gray exterior trim.
More Upscale Cabins
Recognizing that EVs today have more competition than ever, Kia has utilized premium materials and design to produce an upscale look in the cabin. Handsome upholstery is complemented by textured touchpoints and angled surfaces.
Distinguishing features include a two-spoke steering wheel and an off-center cockpit that curves around the driver. This puts buttons and switches in easy reach. In addition to ergonomics, the design integrates advanced dash technologies to improve the natural flow.
In keeping with its green powertrain, many cabin materials are from sustainable sources. The EV offers animal-free textiles such as Vegan leather. Recycled materials are utilized in a variety of creative ways. The final fit and finish is top notch.
Spaciousness and Trim Levels
The Niro SUV claims best-in-class interior space. The increase in passenger volume allows more wiggle room on both rows. Hybrid and PHEVs have 39.5 inches (second-row headroom) and 39.8 inches (second-row legroom). Niro EVs have 38.1 inches (rear headroom) and 36.9 inches (rear legroom). In comparison, the Toyota Prius claims only 33.4 inches of rear legroom.
Many trim levels have a 10-way power chair for the driver. Some have 3-level ventilated front seats, a favorite for Phoenix AZ drivers and front passengers. Of course, they offer cold-weather bonuses such as 3-level heated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.
Hauling and Utility
The Niro cargo hold measures 22.8 cubic feet with a special storage tray under the floor. Open space, when the rear seats are folded, is rated at 63.7 cubic feet. A power liftgate is standard on most trim levels.
Roof capacity is 220 pounds when properly equipped with roof cross rails. Ground clearance is 5.9 inches (Niro EV) or 6.3 inches (HEV, PHEV).
While hybrids aren’t rated for towing, the Niro EV can tow up to 651 pounds without a trailer brake. This rises to 1,651 pounds with a trailer brake.
Dash Tech and Other Smart Technologies
For the EV, PHEV and most Hybrid Niros, standard dash tech includes Kia’s new 10.25-inch touchscreen. The Niro hybrid LX has an 8-inch LCD touchscreen. These systems include wired or wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Likewise, automatic climate control is standard on the LX while most models have dual-zone climate controls. Rear vents ensure that backseat passengers stay cool. A special driver mode can keep you cool without wasting AC on unoccupied seats.
A large 10.25-inch digital instrumentation panel is standard on EV, PHEV and many hybrid models. When equipped with the camera-based blind spot monitor, the images appear on this screen.
The top audio system is an 8-speaker Harman Kardon set-up. It is standard on both EV trim levels and the Hybrid or Plug-in Hybrid SX editions.
The Smart Key is standard on all but the Hybrid LX. The keyless entry system adds a remote starter to the keyfob. A wireless charger is standard on Hybrid EX and higher models as well as all EV and PHEV trims.
Driver Assistance and Semi-Autonomous HDA
Niros have a full suite of Kia Drive Wise technologies that watch the front, sides and rear of the vehicle. This includes a forward collision system, a lane watch, and blind spot monitoring.
Advanced features include adaptive cruise control that works with the navigation system and Highway Driving Assist (HDA) for semi-autonomous driving.
From the 53 mpg hybrid to the PHEV and EV, you’ve got lots of choices with the Niro electric models. Check out our inventory and be in touch with your questions about pricing, financing, and ordering a favorite.
