Avondale

Avondale History

In 1880, the town’s first resident Billy Moore was attracted by the wide open areas. He established a stagecoach stop, saloon, and general store. Eventually the area began to grow as other settlers were attracted to ranching or farming.

If Mr. Moore had had his way, Avondale would still be called Coldwater. This was in response to the Agua Fria River. With the Salt and Gila nearby, the three rivers made many farming enterprises possible, including cotton, the biggest cash crop at the time.

Established in 1900, the city wasn’t incorporated until 1946, a year after the end of World War II. The 1950 Census showed 2,506 people living in the city limits.

The wide open spaces were what attracted a special group of developers to the area in 1964. This was the beginning of the Phoenix International Raceway. They couldn’t have known then what a big NASCAR destination it would become or how many racing series would take advantage of its large track.

You can still get a feel for the way Avondale was. There are many historic buildings in Old Town Avondale. Each October there are Wild West demonstrations, parades and other events for Billy Moore Days.

Today there are two million people within reach of Avondale. The area commute time to work is 29.1 minutes, according to the 2020 Census. That means busy roads and long waits. If that is your daily routine, consider the benefits of a brand new Kia from our Earnhardt Avondale AZ Kia dealerships.
