The town was founded in 1938 and named Surprise as a joke. Little did its founder Flora Mae Statler know that the joke was on her. Although it would take a few generations, her village would thrive despite its desert setting.
The original town was just one square mile, and the few houses were built for agricultural workers. Today it is about 110 square miles.
Sun City West was built in the late 1970s. This brought the burgeoning retirement community closer to what would become Surprise borders. In 1996, they began building Sun City Grand. By 2005, they had completed enough homes to take care of more than 20,000 people.
In 2000, the Surprise population was 30,000, but its proximity to Sun City Grand caused developers to rush into the area. Over the next ten years, new housing helped increase the population to 117,000. By 2020, there were 143,148 people living there.
Since it is one of the more outlying towns in the metro area, it is about 20 miles to Phoenix. The US Census reported that a one-way commute to work averages 30.7 minutes. That’s above average in the metro area.
Employers in the area range from Intel and GoDaddy to Honeywell Aerospace and AIROBOTICS. Arizona is a leader in A & D manufacturing and employment.

Outdoor Activities in Surprise AZ
Recreation and sports are a major part of Surprise community life. The area is just right for hiking, biking and horseback riding.
Whether it’s to see the Kansas City Royals or the Texas Rangers, the Surprise Stadium is the place for spring training and the Cactus League games.
From casual play to professional events, the large Tennis and Racquet Complex is a hub of activity. It hosts tournaments in a 2,500-person arena. There are 2 racquetball, 16 pickleball and 25 tennis courts.
Golfing is a favorite activity for many. Choices include Coyote Lakes, Sun Village, Arizona Traditions, Sterling Grove and Great Eagle Golf Courses. You can also head into Sun City Grand community neighboring Surprise. There are four courses including Granite Falls, Desert Springs and Cimmaron.
In neighboring Sun City, there are numerous recreation centers and four lawn bowling locations. The area has hosted national lawn bowling tournaments.
Day Trips in Surprise AZ
With so many natural wonders all around us in Arizona, it is a good thing to have a comfortable, reliable car for day trips and weekend excursions.
You don’t have to drive far to experience the remarkable White Tank Mountains. The Maricopa County Regional Park spreads out over 30,000 acres with 4,000-foot peaks.
If you prefer to play in the water, you’ve got many choices. The Lake Pleasant Regional Park offers boating, swimming, skiing and more. At the Natural Bridge State Park you can take a dip in Pine Creek. For a combination of excitement and swimming, the Oak Creek Canyon offers some special places to enjoy the water. The most fun is probably Slide Rock State Park.
While in Oak Creek Canyon, you could take the tree-lined West Fork Oak Creek Trail. However, you could see quite a bit from your car. The Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Drive rolls from Sedona to Flagstaff along Route 89A. A winding road takes you 4,500 feet down into the canyon.
While near Sedona, you should definitely take Route 179 and enjoy the Red Rock Scenic Byway. This area has been called a geological wonderland.
Another scenic route is the park route inside Petrified Forest. For your car you can see the remarkable landscapes of both the forest and the Painted Desert.
