The Maricopa County town was incorporated in 1951. The 2022 US Census showed a population of 35,805. It experienced a big population spurt from 2000 to 2010 when it grew from about 7,600 to 31,787. That was a growth of 317 percent.
El Mirage AZ covers an area of 9.95 square miles. Bordering towns include Surprise (northwest), Sun City (northeast), Glendale (south), and Youngtown (east). US 60, the main artery, connects it to Phoenix. Students are served by the Dysart Unified School District.
The main municipal parks include Basin Park and Gateway Park. The city sponsors big events such as the Fall Harvest Festival, the Winterfest Parade and the Spring Faire.
El Mirage was once inhabited by the Hohokam tribe. Known as the Canal Builders, they built canals using stone tools some 1,000 years or more before Europeans came to the area.
