Glendale History

Like many cities around Phoenix, Glendale’s history began with the Arizona canals. In the late 1800s, William John Murphy was a contractor helping to plan and build the canals. He bought land, leading to the settling of the area now known as Glendale.

In the 1930s land prices were about $1 an acre. This led the U.S. Government to buy Arizona land to train pilots. One of the largest installations was Luke Air Field, now known as Luke Air Force Base.

Today about 22,000 people make their home at the Air Force Base. It’s only 7 miles from the original Glendale downtown.

Glendale’s population in 2020 was 248,000. That was a leap from the 2010 Census which showed 226,721 residents.

The city’s thriving economy doesn’t stop many residents from having to commute long distances into Phoenix or other area cities. The US Census reported that 28.6 minutes is average for Glendale drivers. If you want a better ride, your Glendale AZ Kia dealer should be your next stop.

Glendale Today

Historic preservation is a priority in Glendale, which is nicknamed Arizona’s Antique Capital. The downtown area includes ten blocks of antique stores and speciality shops. You can also see some original Craftsman bungalows and the area’s earliest subdivision, Catlin Court. For a touch of nostalgia, the Arizona Doll and Toy Museum is located in the Floralcraft Historic District.

A surprise to visitors, Xeriscape Botanical Garden is a quiet spot in a busy town. This four-acre garden is home to 400 desert plants and trees. Another historic area is at Sahuaro Ranch. This city park retains many historic buildings and plants from its ranching days.

Sports tourism is big business thanks to some major facilities and lots of golf courses. Excitement can be found on game days at the State Farm Stadium or the Gila River Arena. In addition to seeing the NFL Arizona Cardinals play their home games, these destinations host numerous concerts and events.

In the spring, the Camelback Ranch is home to spring training for two professional teams. The Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and 13 MLB competitors play games at the 10,000-seat stadium during the Cactus League season.

Day Trips in Your New Kia

Around here, it pays to have a really good car or SUV for day trips in Glendale AZ. There are so many exciting and interesting sites. After all, if you make an early morning start, you could make it to the Grand Canyon for a day visit.

However, you don’t have to go that far to see dramatic beauty. Glendale is close to the largest municipal park in the country. White Tank Regional Park offers up 30,000 acres of Sonoran Desert views. The sketches on rocks at Petroglyph Plaza help you imagine this place more than 1,000 years ago.

For a different desert view, it’s hard to beat the Painted Desert with its many colors. Even better, the drive is a 2-for-1 as you cruise the Petrified Forest Loop.

If you don’t want to go quite that far, you can head along the Red Rock road to Sedona. Then have lunch in town before taking off on Oak Creek Canyon Road toward Flagstaff. That takes you through one of the deepest and most scenic canyons in the United States.

Near Flagstaff, you can see how Arizonans once lived at Walnut Canyon. Before you reach Sedona, off I-17, you can stop off at Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments.
