Youngtown

The History of Youngtown AZ

Youngtown AZ began with an idea to create a retirement community. Gilbert and Frances Greer’s 320-acre property was key to the success of the Youngtown Development Company.

It began with 125 homes in 1955. It was featured on national television’s Wide Wide World in 1957.

Clubhouse Square, once the heart of a working cattle ranch, was deeded to the city by the Greer family. The old homestead, ranch hand homes, bunkhouses, and other original buildings are used for everything from the Town Hall to the local office of the Maricopa County Sheriff.

The town was incorporated in 1960. They have a small museum in their downtown library celebrating the town’s milestones. These include the first woman mayor and the first female sheriff, among other firsts.

The town enjoyed some economic development due to the proximity to retirement community Sun City. There was also a surge of house building in the 1970s to serve Phoenix area commuters.

Once an area with age restrictions, those were lifted in 1999. This paved the way for new neighborhoods to be built.

The city today rests on about 1.5 square miles of land. The Agua Fria River runs along its western border. The nearest communities include El Mirage to the west, Glendale to the south, and Sun City to the east. Another large neighbor is Peoria to the north.

In 2002, the population doubled with the development of the Agua Fria Ranch subdivision. This also changed the population mix to include many more families and children.

There were about 3,010 residents in 2000, including 746 families. By 2010, there were 6,156 residents. That was an increase of 104.5 percent.

The population was 7,056 in 2020. With a wide mix of residents, there are plenty of commuters heading out to Peoria, Glendale and other Phoenix area destinations. That’s where our store comes into play. We help those commuters find better cars and SUVs
