Things to Do for Families in Phoenix

Phoenix has many different ways to encourage kids to play and think. The Children’s Museum is an award-winning destination focused on younger children. The Arizona Science Center, the Challenger Space Center, and the Museum of Natural History are more likely to appeal to all ages. The Musical Instrument Museum is another all-ages family destination.

The Phoenix Zoo and the Phoenix Botanical Gardens are conveniently located side by side. However you may need two days to truly enjoy them both. Begun in 1939, this living museum sprawls over 140 acres and offers the sculpture-like beauty of desert ecosystems around the world.

Native American art and culture is the heart of the Heard Museum. The Pueblo Grande Museum Archaeological Park is just the first stop of many when you want to introduce the kids to Arizona’s remarkable Hohokam civilization.

When you have a good car, it’s easy to take a tour of the many ancient architectural ruins in the state. The most complete are found at Montezuma’s Castle and Walnut Canyon State Park. The most mysterious is the enormous structure at Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. There are many more including the Indian Mesa at Lake Pleasant, the Agua Fria National Monument, the Mesa Grande Ruins, and the Painted Rock Petroglyph Site.

Phoenix History

With more than 1.608 million residents, Phoenix ranks fifth in population among US cities. It is the heart of the 11th most populous area in the United States. Settlers arrived in 1867 and began planting the crops that would be essential to the area’s economy. These included citrus fruits and cotton as well as alfalfa and hay to keep the cattle fed.

The city started at the place where the Salt and Gila Rivers meet. Water was essential to creating a European style existence in the area. Incorporated in 1881, it was home to 2,500 residents and 16 saloons.

The area was always growing, especially during World War II when the military established many airfields on the flat desert around the town. Yet it was air conditioning starting in the 1950s that really made a difference. By 1980, it had grown to 1.509 million.

Today’s Phoenix has many Fortune 500 companies. Freeport-McMoRan and Honeywell Aerospace represent mining and aviation, two of the most historically important industries in Arizona. Others include Avnet electronics, Republic Services, and PetSmart.
