Phoenix History
With more than 1.608 million residents, Phoenix ranks fifth in population among US cities. It is the heart of the 11th most populous area in the United States. The area was always growing, especially during World War II when the military established many airfields on the flat desert around the town. Yet it was air conditioning starting in the 1950s that really made a difference. By 1980, it had grown to 1.509 million.
