2024 Kia Seltos Review
The 2024 Kia Seltos takes the 2023 design and makes it better. This means more technology, more amenities and a new look. There’s more power in the turbo, too.
How will it match the needs of a daily commuter or a family? How will it fit your lifestyle? Find out in this 2024 Seltos Review.
What’s New for 2024?
The Kia Seltos is a hot commodity. So it may come as a surprise that Kia chose to update this SUV and risk its current popularity. Fortunately the new style is a head turner. More refined curb appeal is accomplished with a number of tweaks including new fascia up front and in back.
Available Star Map lighting adds visual interest. A new Smart Power Tailgate brings more utility on board. A new turbo engine adds excitement to the drive. Last but not least, the X-line trim is new to the trim level lineup.
This brand new SUV has achieved a top-3 rating at US News and World Report. The auto journalists praise it for its spacious, upscale cabin and ample cargo space. They appreciate the updated interior and exterior style. Autoblog says the 2024 Seltos refresh is a strong offering in its segment.
How Big is the Kia Seltos?
If you want your SUV to be big for its class, you’ll appreciate the subcompact Seltos. Despite its subcompact SUV designation, it has 99 cubic feet for passengers. On the back row, your teenage or adult passengers will have little to complain about. They’ll have 38.4 inches of both headroom and 38 inches of legroom. Large windows add to the feeling of spaciousness.
How spacious are rivals? The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek claims slightly more passenger volume but it has less headroom and only 36.5 inches of second-row legroom. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Kona has just 34 inches of backseat legroom and only 94 cubic feet overall.
What’s Utility Like in a Subcompact SUV?
Often subcompact SUVs can’t lay claim to any utility. The 2024 Seltos is challenging that assumption. The extra-large cabin has an extra-large cargo hold. It measures 26.6 cu ft, and that’s enough for 8 carry-on suitcases. That’s more than you’ll find in many small SUVs today.
Engineers made it possible for the floor to be raised slightly to match the folded seats. This guarantees you a large 62.8-cu ft surface. If you need seats, the bench split-folds to allow you to seat either a single passenger or two while gaining length for your cargo.
The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is priced similarly, but it is smaller. Specifically, the Mitsubishi subcompact SUV has 97 cubic feet of passenger volume and 22 cubic feet of cargo volume. Meanwhile the Mazda CX-30 has only 20 cubic feet of cargo volume and just 36.3 inches of second-row legroom.
What is the Interior Style?
Remarkably fashionable, well-constructed, upmarket, and modern are the ways that US News and World Report describes the Seltos. More upscale than its price indicates, the SUV has soft-touch materials and a style that reflects the flagship Kia Telluride.
A high-tech driver’s cockpit puts switches, dials, and two screens in easy reach or view. Refined materials line what you see and what you can’t see. That’s because Kia engineers added plenty of padding to keep the sound out. The acoustic windshield blocks wind noise.
LX and S Trim Level Packages
The LX cockpit has bigger and better infotainment in the form of a large 8-inch touchscreen and a 4.2-in driver’s screen. The system utilizes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for advanced smartphone connectivity. It has three USB ports and six audio speakers.
Standard safety equipment includes a lane departure warning with a lane-keep assist. The forward collision system watches for stopping cars, pedestrians and cyclists. It may apply an autobrake to assist the driver.
When you step up to the S, you get the larger 10.25-in touchscreen with navigation and a 10.25-inch This also means you have access to a WiFi hotspot and satellite radio. Other tech toys include an additional USB port, a remote starter, and push-button start.
Seltos S seats are covered in a combination of synthetic leather and rich cloth upholstery. Cabins have ambient LED lights and automatic climate controls. The exterior gains roof rails and trim-specific alloy wheels. If you add all-wheel drive, it comes with the bonus of heated seats.
Drivers will appreciate the standard blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert. These systems help drivers avoid side-crash dangers whether traveling the streets or backing out of a parking space.
EX, X-Line and SX Trim Level Packages
EX models have a heat-deflecting windshield, a nice standard for our Phoenix AZ weather. The cabin has synthetic leather upholstery and heated front seats. The cockpit gains a wireless charger and a comfortable 10-way-power driver’s chair.
The X-Line adds the turbo and standard all-wheel drive to the EX. Rugged and athletic, X-Line models have blacked-out style elements. The interior gains heated front seats.
As the top trim level, SX models have an even cushier cabin. Drivers will have an auto-dimming rearview mirror and the universal garage door opener. Exterior extras include fog lamps and LED headlamps.
Semi-automated highway driving assist and stop-and-go adaptive cruise control are standards. Traffic sign recognition helps drivers stay aware of speed limits. It has an MSRP under $30,000, helping shoppers keep costs down while enjoying the best technologies and amenities that Kia has to offer.
With the SX sunroof package, the front seats are individual ventilated to keep you cooler when the desert sun is scorching hot. This inexpensive add-on includes a hands-free power liftgate and a digital key for fast entry.
Vehicle Weight and Engine Choices
With FWD, the Seltos weighs less than 3,000 pounds. With AWD, it keeps the weight at some 3,360 pounds. As such, it makes the most of every house under the hood.
The 146-horsepower engine is a known winner from 2023. It produces 132 lb ft of torque that’s controlled by a continuously variable automatic transmission. New for 2024, the turbo 4 has an 8-speed automatic transmission. This helps control 195 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.
As for handling, test drivers seem to agree that the ride is firm and handling is sharp. Car and Driver writes that the Selto turbo is more entertaining and composes than many competitors.
All Wheel Drive and Fuel Economy
An all-wheel drivetrain is standard on the LX, making it possible for any buyer to have this all-weather capability. This model has standard front and rear skid plates, equipping the economy LX buyer with the tools they need for a little off-road action.
However, the S trim and EX trim come with standard front-wheel drive, pleasing those who want the very best fuel economy. AWD is available on the S and EX, and it is standard on the Seltos X-Line and SX trim levels.
Fuel economy for AWD models is good at 27 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. However, front-wheel drive models get even better gas mileage. The FWD Seltos is rated at 28 mpg city and 34 mpg highway.
What’s in It for Parents?
These days parents are demanding more help from their vehicles. Kia obliges with a standard rear seat alert. This reminds caregivers to check the second row. Plus you have two full LATCH attachments on the backrow for your children’s special seats.
The S trim level adds a vehicle exit warning. This is designed to alert the driver to dangers outside the vehicle. You don’t want your kids to open the door into oncoming traffic.
With up to 4 USB ports, you can plug in your children’s smart devices. Plus, the Wi-Fi hotspot, standard on the S and up, allows kids to utilize their smart devices for entertainment on the go.
